Nike Air Band

During last evening's competition of "Nike Air Band" students on campus participated in serious role play. By dressing up to fit the role, as well as lip syncing to various popular songs, they took part in "fandom". Without "Nike Air Band" last evening's role plays would have seemed extremely strange, out of the ordinary, and unconventional. By identifying with celebrities through their performance they were able to find their identity in another role. Through this serious role play, the "celebs" of last evening were also able to develop a sense of belonging(ness) within the community here at Malone because their faces will be recongized on campus by those in the audience. Overall, through "fandom," identity and community are shaped and developed.

I enjoy Nike Air Band because it’s one of those times where everyone makes complete fools out of themselves but it’s okay. It’s also one of the biggest events at Malone. It's also fun to see what songs people will decide on. I like Nike Air Band because people that would not usually get in front of an audience is able to get on stage. They all acted out their routines while we all supported them by cheering and whistling for them. But looking at it through a mass media and society way, they were celebrities of Malone for a while, and we all participated in fandom. We all chose groups we liked and disliked and who we though was the best. We had our conversations about our thoughts. Nike Air Band is enjoyable whether you’re in the audience watching or participating in it. That’s why I like it.

Nike Air Band is a perfect example of what it is like to deal with the idea of role playing. In many communities on campus doing a dance to BSB and singing the lyrics to boyband songs would not be openly accepted behavior. However, because everyone in the audience is aware of the environment and situation, along with the "celebs" themselves, the idea of role playing and attempting to reach a status not actually achieved is openly accepted and even coveted. Nike Air Band does a great job of showing a behavior that is normally accepted but is accepted because of situational characteristics.
